BMW accelerates EV plans, to launch 25 electric-cars by 2023

In a bid to catch up with major rivals like Mercedes and Audi, BMW has accelerated its roll-out plans of electric cars.

The German automaker has said that it would launch 25 electric cars by 2023, two years earlier than the previously announced roadmap.

Notably, more than half of these upcoming vehicles will be fully electric.

BMW ramps-up EV production, bullish on high sale numbers

"By 2021, we will have doubled our sales of electrified vehicles compared with 2019. We will offer 25 electrified vehicles already in 2023- two years earlier than originally planned," said Harald Kruger, Chairman, BMW AG.

"We expect to see a steep growth curve towards 2025: Sales of our electrified vehicles should increase by an average of 30 percent every year," he added.

BMW to offer five fully-electric series in two years

BMW has announced that within two years, it would offer five fully-electric series of vehicles including a new i3 model, a Mini Cooper, BMW iX3, BMW iNEXT, and BMW i4.

Further, the company aims to have more than half a million fully-electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles on the roads by the end of this year.

The automaker is also planning to release long-range electric SUVs

Taking on Mercedes, Jaguar, and Audi, which have already launched long-range electric SUVs, BMW is working to launch plug-in hybrid versions of BMW 5 Series and BMW 2 Series Active Tourer.

These models will come with next-generation technology and will be the first long-range EVs from the German automaker.

In 2020, BMW will release plug-in hybrid models of X1 and BMW 3 Series Touring.

BMW has also presented two of its future models

Alongside the announcement of its roadmap for EVs, BMW has also presented two of its future electric models.

Firstly, it is the Vision M Next which embodies the company's idea of the first electrified sportscar which will offer cutting-edge technology and best-in-class features.

And the other is Vision DC Roadster which represents the future of BMW Motorrad with alternative drive forms.
